Backing Up Your Instagram Data

Oct 08, 2024

How o you back up your Instagram Data?

If you are only creating content on the fly and you rely on Instagram to be your data backup, that may be a bit of a risky approach because if you lose your account for any reason, your data will be lost to you.

Also, if you are creating reels through the Instagram app and you’ve saved them as drafts, if you happen to log out of your account for any reason, the drafts are lost and you can't get them back. App updates, bugs and clearing app data will also jettison your drafts sending you back to square one.

Many people ask : "Can you backup your Instagram Posts?" or " How can I download all my Instagram Posts?".

If you want to download all your information from Instagram, you can follow instructions provided by Instagram on the internet, by going to your Accounts Centre and downloading your information from the 'Download or transfer' option that you'll get to once you've made some other choices, the attached video briefly shows you how. You can also transfer the media for all your posts and stories to either a Google Drive, Dropbox or a few other options for cloud storage but that's just the media, not your captions.

I initiated downloads of both my information and a transfer of the media to see exactly what I would get. The media transfer to Google started immediately which included all the images and reels which I had posted as reels, posts and stories since October 2022 which was when I started my new account, after locking myself out of my original one. These were all saved in chronological order, which was great.

I received an email from Instagram confirming that I had requested an information download and after about 40 minutes I received another email saying that the download was ready for me, indicating that the download was complete and I could go and download my information. There was a link in the email which took me back to my IG account, from where I could start the download.

In the attached video, I do a quick walk through of the format of what you receive because I wanted to see what you actually get.

If you're concerned about your content because you want to be able to repurpose it; or if you're like me, you just want it all organized so that you can refer back to it at any point to see how you're progressing; or you're bulk creating content and you want to have it all at your fingertips when you get to scheduling it, the best option is to have a storage system on your computer that allows you to store you captions, image and video files in one place, so that it is always organized and immediately accessible to you. The IG OrganiSZer provides that whole system for you.

Many online schedulers will allow you to store your content as you create your posts but if you decide to change service provider, either your data is lost or you have to then download it all to your local computer to retain the ownership of and access to it. Also not ideal, as that can be a huge job!

My preference is always to retain ownership and control over all the 'digital stuff' I create and the only way to really do that, is to have a system and to save it on your local computer that is backed up to a cloud storage for safe-keeping, in case something happens to your local copy.

If you're interested in finding out more about the system I've created for managing your Instagram content, watch my free online training to see how it works.

Enjoy the rest of your week!
